      • Dec 19, 2005 · Fuse blowing In the BMW service manual the fuse #15 is for the automatic transmission control module, temperature switch, oil level sender, and alternator. It is supposed to be a 7.5 Amp fuse. It says the fuse #14 is for the ECM engine control module. I would have the components listed above tested for a short of some kind -- :dunno:

      • #3 - Blown Fuse. #4 - Wiring Issues. #5 - Bad Alternator or Battery. There are certain models of car which have alternators dependent on a particular fuse to operate. However, these fuses can blow due to a power surge or simply from old age.
    • Apr 06, 2018 · Wires within the alternator cut through a magnetic field; this in turn induces electrical current. That current is used to power your car's accessories, which can be anything from headlights to the electro-hydraulic lifts on a snow plow. The alternator also keeps the battery fully charged, providing the power it needs to start the car.
      • The only thing I can think of that could have caused a problem is if the tag on the alternator main power lead shorted onto the alternator body and maybe crashed/corrupted/blew the ecu (non starting & Air Con light on), but then if it HAD shorted, I would have thought it would have blown the 120A fuse in the engine compartment fuse box too.

      • The power coming out of the alternator will treat the two wires as one, power follows the path of least resistance. On a safety note, when running the second wire you should fuse it near the battery. The fuse is just in case the wire gets pinched or shorted out, the fuse will blow instead of the wire burning up.
      • The reason this is necessary is that the ignition switch is mutually exclusive in the crank and run positions. This means that there is no power on the “RUN” circuit when the ignition switch is in the “CRANK” mode. Subsequently, without the lead wire from the starter solenoid “R” terminal, the car won’t start.

The positive battery cable will come off the battery and go to a little round black relay that has a rectangular top sticking off it. You have to pop both sides of it and you will see a rectangle car style fuse in there. If you have no power to anything, then ill bet the fuse is blown.

But a short in the alternator coil wouldn't explain why the fuse blows when the key is turned to START. That doesn't change the paths to/from the alternator. Those are the same whether it's in START or RUN, so RUN would blow the fuse, and it doesn't, at least by my reading of R1's writing. Chuck: R1: posted 10-22-2007 04:56 PM ET (US)

Not sure about your year, but in some the Slo-Blow fuses are enclosed and can't be visually checked, and sometimes the smaller blade fuses can have a broken fuse element but it would be easily seen. If you checked all the fuses with a continuity checker (e.g., multimeter on low resistance range) then that should be good. Checked the fuses and the ignition fuse was blown. Put in a good fuse and tried again. If you're mechanically inclined you could pull it off and have it tested for free at most auto part stores, but I'd start with a good visual inspection first to make sure there isn't a wiring issue.
